Smoking Whedon Fonda Science Fiction

I just exchanged a few books I don’t need for Serenity and Firefly, which, of course, I do need.

Since Borders was also having a buy 3 DVDs get one free sale, I also picked up the second X men movie and…..

BARBARELLA!!!!!!!!

Fear me.

the gift…

As some of you will recall, I plowed through Buffy seasons 3 and 4 in
the span of three days while recovering from gallbladder surgery back
in April.

I just finished season 5. (Also watched much Angel in the interim and
a bit of Firefly.) And what I really, really, really want to know is
why the key was so important that the monks didn't destroy it when
they should have.

If that comes up later, don't spoil it, but if not, feel free to discuss.

And no…

I don't want anything for Christmas, but if you really need to regift
anything that has “Joss Whedon” in the credits, I'm your gal.

Lacking a Feast

Well, The library still doesn't seem to have a Feast for Crows, the fourth
volume of the George Martin series. I have had that title reserved since I
got my library card right after moving here in May.

But I've gotten my paycheck first.

However, if I buy the fourth volume in hardcover, I'm going to have to go
back and buy the other three in hardcover. I have all three in trade and
mass market.

Grrr. Maybe I should just go back and reread the first three.

Update on my NPR fangirl crush

Okay. I had been wondering what had happened to Rob
Gifford
to the point that I checked on the NPR website to make
sure he hadn't disappeared. It occured to me to check again today,
after hearing yet another China story by some other, less sexy-voxed
reporter and then seeing this
ad
on journalism.jobs.com.

They've updated it, and I suppose I can now resume my fangirl status.

Rob Gifford served as NPR's China correspondent from 1999-2005. He
is currently on a leave of absence, writing a book about China. When
he returns, he will be NPR's London correspondent.

Oh, i should note…

K and I went to see Serenity over the weekend.

Now I'm sure I'm not the first to turn this phrase, being a belated Whedon fan, but the experience was sheer Whedonistic joy.

K I got lots of good dialogue afterward. I'm not familiar with firefly, being still stuck in season 5 of Buffy and Season 2 of Angel, but getting a precocious near-teen interested in corporate/governmental conspiracy is always funly subversive.

In a sea of DeLay posts

…we have Neil Gaiman, making me laugh my arse off.

Fun on the mall

Yesterday we went to the rally in front of the White House, which was really awesome. There were SO many people there. Never did catch up with the groups I wanted to interview, though I had a nice one with Chester County for Peace. Good mix of old and young, surprisingly little race diversity, though. One of the reasons I think mobilizing churches is so important is that they can empower people of lower economic means to participate in these kind of events.

The book festival was going on at the same time over at the other end of the mall. It was kind of surprising to me that there was enough room for two huge events, but the protest took up the entire area between the White House and the Washington Monument. It was so packed to the gills with people that I had trouble crossing the street to get back to the book festival to see George R. R. Martin.

DFH stayed the duration of the day, catching most of the concert.

My head was getting poundy as K and I made our way home, but the worst part was that lunch was not agreeing with me. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it home, but I did. Felt like hell for the rest of the day, but I figured that calling in sick at Borders was not an option fifteen minutes before the shift. Was not myself for the rest of the night. After that was over, picked DFH up from the metro around 11, came home and went to sleep.

This morning I woke up with a congested head, a screaming headache, more unpleasantness from my digestive tract, and a general feeling of grodiness. So I elected not to get up at the crack of dawn to take the cats back to my mom's, and I elected not to go work a shift that will doubtless aggravate whatever my body is doing. I'm nervous that by doing so I have put the nail in the coffin of my Border's rehire status. But there are other bookstores, and I think I need to accept that I am a bookstore customer, not a bookseller.

Looking at the clock, it seems that I am not going to church today, either. I had planned to go to the interfaith revival tonight in DC, but not after the 24 hours of bleah I've had.

We'll have pictures of yesterday up soonish.

Neil Gaiman sightings in DC area (sept)

Neil Gaiman's book tour has been announced: Sat. Sept. 24: Washington DC, National Book Festival, DC Sun. Sept 25: Washington DC, Borders Bailey’s Crossroads For the rest, have a look at NeilGaiman.com.

I won't be all quibbly and point out that Bailey's Crossroads is not in DC. This almost makes up for the fact that I won't be able to go to NASFIC this year. I still don't know about WFC.

Buffy

Last summer, I was all a goo goo over 24 season 1. And you all thought that I was late jumping on THAT bandwagon.

Today, I watched the last episode of season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Can’t wait for season 2 to start!

(Ferragus, this is the real reason I house-sit for you. heh. I timed this well, neh?)
